Firstly, if you use a variety of different vegetation materials and of different brands the effect might end up a little off, often with colors a little too bright and shiny. Natural colors are often very subdued. One way to get round that is by airbrushing everything with colors of your own choice, and for this to work you would like a consistent base color. Using black as that color furthermore helps creating fake shadows and depth. </p><p>None of this is my idea to start with, but something I have picked up from various online sources. But I have used it before, and like it.</p><p><br /></p>Lennarthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16063914309429065919noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7038847485549147412.post-35769444246827206262023-09-13T21:41:00.007+02:002023-09-13T21:56:05.660+02:00Decaying Stuff - part 12Proceeding with the "landscaping". I wrapped the wall in plastic and put it down where it will eventually sit. I then covered the surrounding terrain with some pumice gel (an acrylic medium) to give it some texture. By wrapping the wall in plastic I could make it sit properly buried in the ground without risking smearing it with the gel.<div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoAztIqBtMpGW8YK73jFnOt0MBJKpWfkBpASXs4ILfbTaN4kMyab6qpYKdo8SJmlD36JW6cR1fFdjMtMMdWq9x54dgC-cYUnDeCnTIUECprd1SPPbMz9-eFtg9_uZ5j6j6q6BvOe6rmtCUzThYOyzgvHZJ13lqYJjN5Yn0aqHwFkUd4c-96PkGERFEYhbd/s4032/IMG_3801.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoAztIqBtMpGW8YK73jFnOt0MBJKpWfkBpASXs4ILfbTaN4kMyab6qpYKdo8SJmlD36JW6cR1fFdjMtMMdWq9x54dgC-cYUnDeCnTIUECprd1SPPbMz9-eFtg9_uZ5j6j6q6BvOe6rmtCUzThYOyzgvHZJ13lqYJjN5Yn0aqHwFkUd4c-96PkGERFEYhbd/w400-h300/IMG_3801.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div>When the gel had set I removed the wall and painted the ground a brown color. As will eventually be evident (but not today) this step serves no real purpose at all. I just wanted to do that to make things look more "real" during the next step. Anyway, with the ground painted I went on to apply some static grass. But before I did that I test placed all the props (bikes, appliances and so on) so that I could mark their locations. I did not want any grass exactly in this spots since the things later placed there would then float on top of the grass in an unrealistic way. Like this:</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRFqcch2pdiFvaRG1OyF7tQjOOa9C4-7bl4SxrY5HQnIVXBGhPtrgdoO7xwYCZNHFAkFfXqfDbwAYRPFyQD5IWEDtsYvu4Nm7Ga5cZXQ3kdkaw_h_BCxlSjyoe9x8vz7Qp_SBjNklQgeC-jg63bKLIq8_vhCLUFLjmh3rm8bTjlg2IfkZFsRHApHir6Lxx/s4032/IMG_3766.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRFqcch2pdiFvaRG1OyF7tQjOOa9C4-7bl4SxrY5HQnIVXBGhPtrgdoO7xwYCZNHFAkFfXqfDbwAYRPFyQD5IWEDtsYvu4Nm7Ga5cZXQ3kdkaw_h_BCxlSjyoe9x8vz7Qp_SBjNklQgeC-jg63bKLIq8_vhCLUFLjmh3rm8bTjlg2IfkZFsRHApHir6Lxx/w400-h300/IMG_3766.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>Perfectly OK chairs, at the first look. Then I thought it would be nice with a matching table, which I scratch built from styrene and some brass rod. But when I placed a chair next to the table I saw that something was out of scale. The chair looked awfully small alongside the table. Measurements and calculations showed that the chairs are rather 1/45 scale than the advertised 1/35. Bugger! 😒</p><p>The small size also reveals itself when a chair is placed alongside the bike. The picture below shows the problem.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEji6aT087I5dcT-laHmFoLtHzHdBbtIDrdpDLjmU_btHZuTSWqMOtGv7H1zWaIcQv74ZK8KAmxhmsKIFezZTu7QcqdaO_E2t_6ZQm2j69xRhKlR3BbsU5dPRgCjE1xHc-Avl9Yuro9wQkM50vAOipFSOhioBZVkKrDSqqB0-1zX-BukHas_d5jYsLTeK9iR/s4032/IMG_3765.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEji6aT087I5dcT-laHmFoLtHzHdBbtIDrdpDLjmU_btHZuTSWqMOtGv7H1zWaIcQv74ZK8KAmxhmsKIFezZTu7QcqdaO_E2t_6ZQm2j69xRhKlR3BbsU5dPRgCjE1xHc-Avl9Yuro9wQkM50vAOipFSOhioBZVkKrDSqqB0-1zX-BukHas_d5jYsLTeK9iR/w400-h300/IMG_3765.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>The fridge and the washing machine (from the same manufacturer) are also on the small side, but only a tad. I think they can pass. What to do with the chairs I do not know right now. I'll postpone that decision for now, and start working on the scenery base instead. Seems funnier. 😐</p>Lennarthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16063914309429065919noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7038847485549147412.post-68187585581798359722023-08-21T16:32:00.000+02:002023-08-21T16:32:04.746+02:00Decaying Stuff - part 5<p>Attention turned the appliances: a refrigerator and a washing machine. It turned out that the actual bicycles where identical in the two different "Soldier-with-Bicycle" kits I had bought. The two kits where the same, except for the figures themselves. What otherwise differed between the kits was which gear you were supposed to load onto the bike. This is what the bike parts of the kits both looked like.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7YzQ-WvSs9WnLGbxCQrQFiA2-SYOJwfa4dHhKf3KUIii3ChbXWqbItcbj3WeP07xUcLE9aZG_HMrXzh5psKEtt6FM0u06OaT2-F-wGybsCpUubXWbFfp7ShttfFBpT_VvXtOPA91NBYKRwyicT0TIww51NtEy1q53Ig9_q-qFqUCg2f9KF30ZmilBEhaF/s4032/IMG_3748.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7YzQ-WvSs9WnLGbxCQrQFiA2-SYOJwfa4dHhKf3KUIii3ChbXWqbItcbj3WeP07xUcLE9aZG_HMrXzh5psKEtt6FM0u06OaT2-F-wGybsCpUubXWbFfp7ShttfFBpT_VvXtOPA91NBYKRwyicT0TIww51NtEy1q53Ig9_q-qFqUCg2f9KF30ZmilBEhaF/w400-h300/IMG_3748.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>I just wanted the generic bike parts and not any of the military gear. I also did not use the more archaic looking parts, like the old style hand-brake handle, since I wanted the bikes to pass as a little more modern items, matching the washing machine and the refrigerators.</p><p>This was not a very easy build (for me at least), since many parts were very small and fragile, having a tendency to break. Resulting in some not very nice looking attempts at mending. </p><p>I made one of the bikes more or less intact looking while the other one has been somewhat cannibalized and wrecked Here are the two bikes after assembly.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNRBCstsu3oEToPxgnqXcBOwhYFTp03UuF1HuwJC2kBIaQWNtQNDktejiqChfbAlBDhiChvj3eiZ7BDwaen5Ikbdspp5Ennt2JR8N3DMDQPtdJVELU6zmHxyH1U_9wPNV4nOxvdEFLzqxFDlTzzCmdecxkyPh7Ozt43ioCB9HbPozkaSXUbzJLzvp4JQMa/s4032/IMG_3751.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNRBCstsu3oEToPxgnqXcBOwhYFTp03UuF1HuwJC2kBIaQWNtQNDktejiqChfbAlBDhiChvj3eiZ7BDwaen5Ikbdspp5Ennt2JR8N3DMDQPtdJVELU6zmHxyH1U_9wPNV4nOxvdEFLzqxFDlTzzCmdecxkyPh7Ozt43ioCB9HbPozkaSXUbzJLzvp4JQMa/w400-h300/IMG_3751.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Lennarthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16063914309429065919noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7038847485549147412.post-73131635530177984182023-08-16T18:21:00.000+02:002023-08-16T18:21:25.703+02:00Decaying stuff<p>Long time, no post. It had already been primed (black) and had received a layer of rust colors. It was now time for the actual paint layer and some chipping and rust effects. So I gave the body parts a coat of chipping fluid, and when that had dried, a layer of the primary body color. </p><p>When the primary color had dried I started to remove parts of it by brushing it with water. Since the color and the chipping fluid are water solvable they will start to flake away revealing the rust below. Like this.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvXK56JJDflZbxm7j5oFJ2psP5xHbBK6PnNpepJV3FmlWPkWVsSmkZjDw7BWiRIXqNS0c8puZk5gFrZOVK7S6Ri0nMFTcGJgXON5T-8VmhdtuFVFyC8DcvpvBDoAjyq3F5zIh2wp1aIBjM_Bu4u-85Opv4x0ISh3jF18jYuuigBkdQFn5RPbQE7UImMA/s4032/IMG_3569.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="548" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvXK56JJDflZbxm7j5oFJ2psP5xHbBK6PnNpepJV3FmlWPkWVsSmkZjDw7BWiRIXqNS0c8puZk5gFrZOVK7S6Ri0nMFTcGJgXON5T-8VmhdtuFVFyC8DcvpvBDoAjyq3F5zIh2wp1aIBjM_Bu4u-85Opv4x0ISh3jF18jYuuigBkdQFn5RPbQE7UImMA/w411-h548/IMG_3569.jpeg" width="411" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNtWJrr2IJrLO7qTOObg_h98VpZa6EI-WxOKObvp0IerKdwnOkLcLqZ6SdNyP9rzjolUEYWePDCaNW9myZRRuzBexHZ27D5GHdlmWQPM6OH4J9kot94JOLw-pPxfjS17POFSWiB0EIm3Rh0DxAIxXVCKoMkuLBo__6OU-LvJDg3oSBtLy-XJr0DrROgA/s4032/IMG_3572.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="544" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNtWJrr2IJrLO7qTOObg_h98VpZa6EI-WxOKObvp0IerKdwnOkLcLqZ6SdNyP9rzjolUEYWePDCaNW9myZRRuzBexHZ27D5GHdlmWQPM6OH4J9kot94JOLw-pPxfjS17POFSWiB0EIm3Rh0DxAIxXVCKoMkuLBo__6OU-LvJDg3oSBtLy-XJr0DrROgA/w408-h544/IMG_3572.jpeg" width="408" /></a></div><br /><p>I finished this step by spraying the whole thing with Tamiya Flat Clear to seal it all. What's the difference?) The scene will show an old rusty and beat up Volkswagen Beetle, partly overgrown by moss.</p><p>But first, I have to admit; This build is heavily inspired by a VW Beetle build by 'Night Shift' of YouTube fame. Check him out! My build will be quite similar to his. It just looked so darn fun that I just had to do it. 😀 </p><p>I started out with a Tamiya Volkswagen 1966 Beetle kit in 1:24 scale. As here:</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiO42VZCLXOyeiWH4Atbnhp0T3Th742sHzk3BBcgu-f5GPn2r1Un5EUXFDxlFGBv-pptWmDfD6fkTkY87TImaupszsOhhkvtQGZZz3DaWjm-mje8gp2BOPiK5Y-73eEf8XFKFcxatT2K_O3LX3UrXVLcUteLY808FpdQWq_jLPVkMURa_cwREygZ3LzPA/s4032/IMG_3517.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="515" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiO42VZCLXOyeiWH4Atbnhp0T3Th742sHzk3BBcgu-f5GPn2r1Un5EUXFDxlFGBv-pptWmDfD6fkTkY87TImaupszsOhhkvtQGZZz3DaWjm-mje8gp2BOPiK5Y-73eEf8XFKFcxatT2K_O3LX3UrXVLcUteLY808FpdQWq_jLPVkMURa_cwREygZ3LzPA/w387-h515/IMG_3517.jpeg" width="387" /></a></div><br /><p>Since this Beetle was supposed to have been abandoned and been the victim of weather, and maybe even abuse, I started by doing some damage to the body and front hood parts. I then spray painted all major parts with a black primer, followed by a rusty brown layer. The latter was actually a layer of of several different red/orange/brown tones.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2fMFWrVSInJwUi5BGu5q9no0h8_ksEsUAErsvJa2s76htZ__443kyLmOXSQpIn5cj2iTYgQH4yAmZFAUDVLl2HlU1bD98rWZytw8N9A59iSRfGj9X1o9qeLfpjptWbzdAASEIBdzxGhDcKN3_wmkOfUga3U80lA4kEGkDRX3m_hOxsJm5W7gOIbwwiw/s4032/IMG_3525.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="531" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2fMFWrVSInJwUi5BGu5q9no0h8_ksEsUAErsvJa2s76htZ__443kyLmOXSQpIn5cj2iTYgQH4yAmZFAUDVLl2HlU1bD98rWZytw8N9A59iSRfGj9X1o9qeLfpjptWbzdAASEIBdzxGhDcKN3_wmkOfUga3U80lA4kEGkDRX3m_hOxsJm5W7gOIbwwiw/w398-h531/IMG_3525.jpeg" width="398" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLZlXsetcHH4dAuW37T76w-s7y0N4WN4iiwpdjt-dNdg9l_zKbyI0QLEDIMgBylvHE7C_I9sgsWZeDd_-SA2vIo0wGw0BsTYSk2jp5gM_kBphu5wRQK3RJ-77CgCkijDBJhMijKKleOqMXDrAv9SeR7GqNUHqpVT0FSvD0RcOtJfd0deyl3uTWQF9wyA/s4032/IMG_3526.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="513" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLZlXsetcHH4dAuW37T76w-s7y0N4WN4iiwpdjt-dNdg9l_zKbyI0QLEDIMgBylvHE7C_I9sgsWZeDd_-SA2vIo0wGw0BsTYSk2jp5gM_kBphu5wRQK3RJ-77CgCkijDBJhMijKKleOqMXDrAv9SeR7GqNUHqpVT0FSvD0RcOtJfd0deyl3uTWQF9wyA/w385-h513/IMG_3526.jpeg" width="385" /></a></div><p><br /></p>Lennarthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16063914309429065919noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7038847485549147412.post-469645625728394842023-06-02T16:22:00.002+02:002023-06-02T16:22:25.733+02:00A park scene with a bridge - part 2 (final, it seems)<p>I sort of lost interest in the park scene. At least for the time being. Mostly due to the fact that I could not come up with a feasible way of making that special type of reed that grows in the canals of the park. I did at finish the bridge though, as you can see below. In the end, it turned out quite good I think.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPJV4jb-X_P7-XMigA5ipwUOEAzNiLXLwJAHKjvA1UO3o2QYgLiqKin7LeWzM00xcjZZyBEygtGwToW5vdg0c1KbonxoTTT488MgT_Z7eQzBLkh7rdtLgI-znBSrV5BlbY6EWKNMW3_2iEumSdeLrciRIYQFw-IeJPvnurdTWwN-D_vZYSVoZuVGFpKQ/s2998/IMG_3604.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2248" data-original-width="2998" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPJV4jb-X_P7-XMigA5ipwUOEAzNiLXLwJAHKjvA1UO3o2QYgLiqKin7LeWzM00xcjZZyBEygtGwToW5vdg0c1KbonxoTTT488MgT_Z7eQzBLkh7rdtLgI-znBSrV5BlbY6EWKNMW3_2iEumSdeLrciRIYQFw-IeJPvnurdTWwN-D_vZYSVoZuVGFpKQ/w400-h300/IMG_3604.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="text-align: left;">Who knows, I might return to the actual park scene some day.</span></div>Lennarthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16063914309429065919noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7038847485549147412.post-50052481691138922312022-09-10T13:40:00.001+02:002022-09-10T19:48:11.970+02:00A park scene with a bridge - part 1<p>First, the work to restore the missing photos is ongoing. It is a lot of them but I am slowly working through the posts, backwards in time.</p><p>In the meantime I have begun a new project - a small scene of a footbridge in a park. The inspiration is from a nearby park, namely Drottningholmsparken which is surrounding the royal residence here in the outskirts of Stockholm, Sweden. In that park there are a few (three I think) similar bridges across the ponds and canals. They all have wrought iron railings, painted green. Here are some photos.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWkfg6BYYKP89sr4E5s0DneZIR4PLVhRFHnT4KPB6Edvdkze3P5T2YHATbnP_x-w7TmRgsPNbt0WtdBt1FKIbhcFb4w4jVr4vIu0Fdt4N9Mc1vQYFY9xacSmQnpy70r0ikticHzhBiBL9eSU4Q8nGI4ac7MJC3FrNGXvzseK-2HuQL0Fb1p73lNdxioQ/s4032/IMG_3267.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWkfg6BYYKP89sr4E5s0DneZIR4PLVhRFHnT4KPB6Edvdkze3P5T2YHATbnP_x-w7TmRgsPNbt0WtdBt1FKIbhcFb4w4jVr4vIu0Fdt4N9Mc1vQYFY9xacSmQnpy70r0ikticHzhBiBL9eSU4Q8nGI4ac7MJC3FrNGXvzseK-2HuQL0Fb1p73lNdxioQ/w300-h400/IMG_3267.jpeg" width="300" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbucE5pGiFeBb2k6RSI9bulAIZEE85tnqNJ35q93IYv4JsOEV9B2jwYt3XaF_imFatksZGBsqpvwQnm5IS3D_pgVoROycFwamZ6G8yfWoW7TZvcUYJSx-Fi6bmR_hZP3QTVIFuFTiD91vvQX3GLI24fWNrKOk-aakiD7Ka1ZlROuvvOtwTaBwTKf__sA/s4032/IMG_3334.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbucE5pGiFeBb2k6RSI9bulAIZEE85tnqNJ35q93IYv4JsOEV9B2jwYt3XaF_imFatksZGBsqpvwQnm5IS3D_pgVoROycFwamZ6G8yfWoW7TZvcUYJSx-Fi6bmR_hZP3QTVIFuFTiD91vvQX3GLI24fWNrKOk-aakiD7Ka1ZlROuvvOtwTaBwTKf__sA/w300-h400/IMG_3334.jpeg" width="300" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>I though that a scene with a bridge like this across some water would be fun to build. So I sat out to do just that.<div><br /></div><div>I made the railings from brass rod, bronze wire and flat silver thread. The silver thread was for the curly shapes of the railings. I used silver thread since that was the only thing I could find in suitable dimensions. It was not that pricey after all.<div><br /></div><div>I made a jig in order to be able to produce all the curly pieces in a consistent way.
